Activity 2 - Superhero Costume Design
Purpose of Activity
This activity allows students to develop an understanding and appreciation of the diverse range of properties of nano-fabrics. Students explore how added nanoparticles and nanofibers contribute to the properties of nano-fabrics. This can lead to consideration for their future applications in the textiles industry. Students can also further reflect on how the properties of these nanomaterials could be beneficial in other industries.

Activity Notes
The YouTube video posted by 10b Movie MEDIA and entitled ‘The Incredibles (2004) – Family Suits from Edna Mode’ is a clip taken from the film in which Edna E Mode is a character. This video gives students an understanding of Edna’s work as a superhero costume designer. In this clip, some of the costumes Enda has created are tested under pressures such as fire and bullets. These tests also show the costume’s ability to endure stretching and friction. The hyperlink to this video is below:

This video gives students ideas as to what conditions superheros might endure so that they can think about the properties they’d like their costumes to have.
Another YouTube video posted by Steven Connery and entitled ‘Textile Nano Fabric Coating’ demonstrates some of the advantages of a particular nano-fabric coating. This coating is resistant to water, stains and bacteria. The hyperlink is shown below:

The Superhero costume activity requires teacher guidance as students need to research nano-fabrics and their properties as well as how these fabrics are made.

Assessment
This activity can be marked and contribute to a fair percentage of the students overall mark for the subject. Upon completion students can present their posters to classmates. Posters can later be hung on classroom walls.
